Meant To Be

As if it were meant to be, a transportation request for a puppy from Florida to California popped up in my email two days before I was scheduled to depart on a cross country trip from Florida to California. Hattie, a 3 month old lab mix, was scheduled to be put down the next day and desperately needed transportation to her new family in California. Knowing that there was not much of a chance that anyone else could easily make a trip of that length, I decided that with some rearranging we could fit Hattie and her crate into our Piper Archer.

Over the course of 3 days Hattie, myself, and a friend made the 11 stop trip from Florida to California. We made great progress from Florida to Texas, but our luck ran out when we departed Texas for California. Over the next two days we pushed our way through 25-30 knot headwinds. At times we were only getting a ground speed of 75 knots and continuous light to moderate turbulence.  It wasn’t much fun for us, but Hattie didn’t seem to mind a bit. She slept for most of the flights, and then happily greeted everyone at all of the FBO’s when we landed.

She was a real hit with the line guys and girls at the front desks, and even some of the other pilots and passengers went out of their way to say hi and pet her. She made a lot of friends along the way. 22.2 hours of flight time later we touched down in San Diego, California.

Hattie was a real trooper, and because of this flight she is now able to live a long great life with her new family in Los Angeles, California. She was such a great sport, very well behaved, and really enjoyable to have along for the ride. We will miss her; her new family is very lucky to have such a great pup!

This is a great organization and I would like to offer to assist in a small way. I am a retired USAF aircraft maintenance technician (flightline/phase maint.) and also worked at Lockheed Georgia Co. building C-130s. I am near Knoxville, TN and McGhee-Tyson Aprt (TYS) and Downtown Knoxville Aprt. If I can assist with any general maintenance such as washing, cleaning or an extra hand for the certified mechanic (I have no license)please let me know. I am also available if needed as a right seat passenger. Keep up the good work!!

    Patrick,

Thanks for your kind words and support. I suggest you visit the PnP forum, http://www.pilotsnpaws.org/forum/. There is a section called “Other Volunteer Offers” where your offer can be placed for other users to find. You will need to sign up for the forums.

What a terrific story. I love that everyone comes together with their own talents for the best outcome for the dog. Proper placement is the ultimate happy ending.
I have always had rescued dogs & I recommend anyone who’s looking for any cat/dog to go to their local shelter. You won’t be dissapointed. I live in for Murray or whitfield county Georgia. If I can transport any Dogs via my car, I’d be honored.
    Continued success, Teri & family

Teri, a great way to help is by adding yourself as a volunteer via the Other Volunteer Offers on the forum, http://www.pilotsnpaws.org/forum/. When you sign up, be sure to add your location and if you can be a foster for a night or two. Then list how you can help on the board, and you might having someone contacting you. That is sometimes the key to making a flight a “go” from a “no-go”.

Beautiful story! It gives me a little hope that I might find help trying to save a GSD that needs medical attention in a high kill shelter. He is in a Los Angeles shelter and I live in FL. God Bless the people who do this!!
