“Moose” Hitches Ride with Syracuse Men’s Basketball Team

Faced with another round of “polar vortex,” a scheduled PnP mission out of Greensboro, NC to Ithaca, NY was on the verge of being cancelled.   The normal mission of three legs had been scheduled all week, involving the volunteer services of our PNP pilots; however, the weather was again turning to ice, freezing rain and snow north of Washington, DC, so on Friday, March 14th, the mission was scrubbed…..

On Saturday, March 15th, another mission departing out of Greensboro, going South to Lakeland, FL, headed by first leg pilot Jon Wells, mentioned to the rescue, Finding Great Homes, that the Syracuse Men’s Basketball Team was departing from Greensboro as well, on a chartered 737.   Not thinking anything of it, Jon headed on south with his mission.  The Rescue owner, Robin Manley, through quick thinking, just happened to ask the Flight Coordinator if he knew about Pilots N Paws and what the organization did.   He did not, but when he found out that a small Wheaton Terrier by the name of “Moose” was waiting to be transported to his new ‘forever’ home in Ithaca, NY; however, due to weather and the small planes unable to complete the mission, he quickly volunteered to step in and help the cause.

Within minutes, the rescue retrieved the young “Moose” and returned to the FBO in Greensboro, where he was quickly greeted by the Syracuse Men’s Basketball Team, Band and Cheerleading Squad, which had been in Greensboro for the ACC Basketball Tournament.   He was the first to board the 737, after going through the “protocol” of TSA and being “wanded” to ensure he was legitimate and safe to travel.

Within a few short hours, he was in Ithaca with his brand new owners.  I can only imagine how much fun he had on that flight.  The cheerleaders refused to let him go in a crate, as there were plenty of open seats.

Thanks to the Syracuse Men’s Basketball Team, Band and Cheerleading Squad……saving another life.

Go Syracuse, that was so nice. I did laugh at the cheerleaders I wouldn’t have let him go either. What a cute puppy, thank you again to pilot and paws for the great idea.
