Janet Geren shares the following story…

I did a short video of Cupcake’s long trek to us here in Northern California and wanted to share with you and thank you so much for helping us. We lost all of our bunnies on March 21 during a fire that burned our whole place down.

This is a short video to thank all the amazing people who made it possible for us to be able to be a forever home for such a dear and sweet bunny. Here is our new girl from shelter, plane and car to us, about 600 miles. One small little bunny who means the world to us.

She was taken to a high kill shelter. She is now safe at home after first being rescued by “The Bunny Bunch” at their Fountain Valley Rescue Site. She was named Cupcake, and the BB spayed her before she was adopted by us. Coordinated by so many wonderful people, I also want to thank Bunny Bunch and her volunteers for saving this wonderful girl from the OC shelter and providing her with love and shelter until she could find a forever home and a way to get there! And to the volunteer who took her home and brought her to the Airport early Saturday morning. Cupcake traveled (I am quite sure and maybe more) over 600 miles by airplane and car.

Thanks Sue Clark, Lady Flyer for bringing cupcake to her final destination and thanks to the Volunteer PNP Pilot, John Baker and your great “TEAM” Cupcake… Judy Zelmar the navigator and flight attendant, Karen Adams Co-pilot, Cupcake safely arrived to us at 3 pm pst at Nancy’s Airport Restaurant on May 11, 2013 as scheduled! Randy, Mom and I are so grateful to you and it was great to meet you!!! Cupcake is at home with us now after a very long day and exploring her new home! Thank you So much, all of you for bringing this beautiful bunny to her forever home.

Check out yesterday’s post for more of the story.

Pets are part of the family. In an effort to help find homes for animals in need, Subaru and Petmate are outstanding partners with Pilots and Paws.

Amy Lusty with the Echo Dogs White Shepherd Rescue faced another logistical challenge. After successfully organizing Tulah’s trip earlier this year, she was now working on the transport of a cute male White German Shepherd from Florida to his adoptive home in Baltimore, Maryland.

Storm with Lukas and Erica in Savannah. Ready for the ride of his life!

These trips to adoptive families are emotionally rewarding because everyone knows the dogs are going to families who will love and take care of them. Amy started to work with her team of volunteers, some of whom were involved in Tulah’s rescue. She also reached out to PilotsNPaws to assist her and since the route was similar to the previous one, 3 of the PNP pilots involved with Tulah’s rescue accepted the challenge again and assisted in Storm’s travel.

Storm arriving in Lancaster, SC with Rob and Lukas. Are you sure this
is a good time to exit the Mooney?

Starting from Winter Haven with Joan, Storm was driven by volunteers Chris, Sandy, Beatrice and another Chris all the way to Savannah, GA where he spent the night with Danielle. The next morning Pilot Rob and his son Lukas took him for a Mooney ride to Lancaster, SC where he met again with Pilot Christophe and his wife Larysa. They flew their Cardinal to Danville, VA where they met with Pilot Frank. He flew Storm to Stafford, VA where he had the opportunity to meet with Doug and Karen, the adoptive family who took Storm for his final ride home.

<img class=" wp-image-11647 " alt="Frank and Christophe meeting in Danville, VA. Storm is clearly bored with the photo shoot of these guys

Contrary to Tulah’s trip which was delayed by bad weather, Storm’s transportation happened smoothly and with a gorgeous Spring weather. Go figure!

Storm and Lilly playing at “home”.

UPDATE: Debra, Storm’s adopter, says “Things could not be better and I couldn’t ask for a better brother for Lily!! Thanks again for everything from the bottom of my heart!!! She put together a photo album to share.

Mahesh Sankaran, with his son Kirun accompanying him, climbed aboard his Piper on June 1 in Niagara Falls, NY for a special mission. They were enroute to pick up 3 dogs from Cheri, who is a volunteer with the Boone Animal Rescue Coalition (BARC).

The duo picked the dogs up there and flew them back to Niagara Falls. The dogs did well on the flight, even though it was very bumpy for some time until Mahesh got above 5000 feet. Cara from Heeling Home Dog Rescue in Markham, Ontario (near Toronto) met the flight. With her dad as her assistant, she transferred the dogs to her car and they took the dogs across the border into Canada.

John took off in a plane loaded with 14, that’s right fourteen, animals for his recent rescue flight! The first leg was to Livermore, where a team loaded 12 animals (#1-terrier, #2-bunny, #3-beagle, #4-lab mix mom, #5-12 her 8 puppies).

Four puppies were in a separate crate from mom, but the other puppies didnt want to come out of the crate with their mom preflight so that’s where they stayed.

Midway into the flight, John smelled an unappealing aroma that didn’t go away, and he finally realized that somebody pooped! Thankfully, it wasn’t his copilot.

At the end, there were 4 fresh puppies and 4 poopy puppies. (The midflight rukus was solved). After the dropoff, John picked up 2 French bulldogs on their way to Palomar Airport to finish off the day.

Princess had an unfortunate start to her life. Just a few months old, she was neglected and allowed to run off of a leash. Princess was hit by a car which shattered one of her rear legs, requiring it be amputated to save her life.

Unable to care for her, Princess’s owners turned her over to Home For Good Dog Rescue, which saves dogs from high kill shelters in Georgia and South Carolina. Princess will be flying to New Jersey, weather permitting, with a cargo of five other rescued puppies, all of whom are looking for a new home in New Jersey.

Scott Messinger was off again for another rescue flight. This trip was for a Pit Bull Rescue, Fighting for the Bully’s, located in Pottsville, PA.

Pit Bull Rescues are few and far between, since most municipalities will not even ALLOW local rescues to take any of the bully breeds. A litter of pittie pups that finds itself in a remote Georgia animal control shelter has almost no chance of making it out alive.

These little pit/mixes were driven 5 hours from a kill shelter in Cartersville, Georgia to South Carolina by some very warm hearted folks. They had been on the road since 5am in order to meet Scott Lancaster, SC by takeoff time.

The days’s standout was squiggy, a half beagle, half pit who was just getting over a case of mange.

They got local TV coverage for Pilots N Paws upon Landing in Reading, PA, and that’s always a good thing. Lots of happy fosters, and as you can see even the airport crew fell in love with the dogs!

On May 27, 2013, rescue volunteers Pam Hensley, Peggie Powell, and Vicky Loose drove 12 puppies to the airport in Roanoke Rapids, NC (IXA). Eight of the puppies spent the first month of their lives living in the woods with their mother, who has so far avoided being caught. One of the other puppies was found next to a highway and picked up by some kindhearted people who stopped their car for him. The other three are siblings from two different litters and their mother was hit by a car and killed. Heather Pen of Crate Escape—a rescue group in Wappingers Falls, NY—agreed to take all 12 dogs. Michele McGuire and John Davis flew to IXA, loaded the dogs into Michele’s Cessna 172, and flew to Westminster, MD (DMW), where they transferred the pups to Elliott DeGraff’s Cherokee 140. Elliott flew them up to Poughkeepsie, NY where he was met by lots of Crate Escape volunteers. One of the dogs was Elliott’s 400th PnP dog! Thanks to PNP, the pilots, and the rescue volunteers in NC and NY, these twelve puppies will soon be in loving homes.

Photos from the flight can be found at http://www.safeandsoundpets.com/12puppies.html. The Safe and Sound Pets website is run by Michele McGuire.
