I am sure that if there are enough rescues involved and weather permits, it shouldn't be hard to accomplish this goal.

thanks everyone who has posted so far.....keep the posts coming.......we need to hear from more rescue groups, shelters, and PILOTS who are willing to participate. This is not impossible, we just have to plan ahead and the first stage is knowing who will volunteer to be included in this nationwide event!

I'd be happy to help transport. My plane is based in Hayward, CA (south of Oakland).

Jon, Debi, and everyone...

I also claim being guilty of just noticing Jon's post regarding 5000 animal rescue week.

Seems like a great effort to get the word out.....count me in .....what I can do to help....

Jon, I remember puttering around the local airport at all hours of the day and night ....nobody said a word.....we kids (of all ages) would have BBQs, hanger dances, and other social gatherings all over the airport.........it will be a sad day when you can't even wander the local airport without escorts, etc......

That is a fantastic idea! We always need help with transport. If weather permits that is completely a doable number to transport. And this is such a great asset for rescues I would hate to see it no longer able to work.

Believe it or not one of the things currently giving me problems is getting a committment from shelters to make available 5000 animals and linking to rescues to commit to take them.

If a shelter has an over abundance of animals it takes in, and has to euthanize a high percentage of them my businessman side of me says we have no issue with the supply side of this equation. I am presuming each shelter can then work to find a rescue or another shelter within a reasonable distance that will agree to make space until permanent homes for these animals can be found. We need shelters and rescues willing to do this within 200 to 400 miles from the sending shelter.

Once we are assured that on a date a few months in the future we have sending shelters (or rescues) and receiving rescues and shelters we can kick this project into high gear. We will reach pilots with access to planes through this site and through all other places pilots can see the need. The final step will be to make the media aware of what is happening nationally and at the local level so this event can get the widespread attention it needs. The messages are simple: This nation needs good spay and neuter programs, we need more volunteer pilots, and we need to reverse the needless threats to aviation brought about by TSA mandated restricted access and by the 2011 budget which calls for user fees on general aviation.

Step one is getting 5000 animals committed to us along with safe places to transport these animals. Late September appears to be the time frame for this effort.
