7 Huskies – 7 Months Old – 7 Days to Get to Rescue

Dawn plucked a husky off the streets of Odessa, TX.  The husky was running with a pack of 3 other dogs, which have already been adopted.  Dawn took the husky home to Austin, TX to foster her.  The dog was so thin that Dawn never knew she was pregnant until a week later when puppies started to arrive.

The six pups were all healthy, and mom recovered and gained weight.  After the family grew up a bit, it was time to find them forever homes.  Monica arranged back-to-back caravans one weekend from Austin to Rockford, IL, where their rescue Forever Husky, would find them homes.

Both days had their trials and tribultions.  Day one of the relay flighs included the following pilots:

Leg 1 – Austin, TX to Tyler, TX (KTYR) – Rick
Leg 2 – Tyler to Rogers, AR (KROG)- Craig A.
Leg 3 – Rogers to  St. Louis Regional (KALN) – Mike M.
Leg 4 – St. Louis Regional to Rockford, IL (KRFD) – PJ

Leg 1 had been set for pilot John to get the pups from Austin to Tyler, but fog in the forecast was going to have him grounded for far too long in the morning.  Pilot Rick stepped up since he was IFR rated to take that leg – AT MIDNIGHT the night before the flight.  Mike, the pilot for Leg 3 showed up a bit early, which was a plus as he landed with a flat tire.  He was able to get the flat fixed and be on his way.  But poor PJ, the last leg didn’t get home until after 10:30pm.

Day two had the following line-up:

Leg 1 – Austin, TX to Claremore, OK with Pilot Dave G.
Leg 2 – Claremore, OK to St. Louis (KCPS) with Ed
Leg 3 – St. Louis to Illinois was suppose to be Ray, but he had plane isses while the Austin leg was taking off, so Monica had to rush to get ground help to IL.  A pilot in the St. Louis area, Diane, ALWAYS offers to help by ground on the Pilots N Paws forum since she doesn’t have a plane.  So she picked up the pups in St. Louis and drove them north while an awesome volunteer for Forever Husky, John, met her 4 hours away & drove back to IL.

The transport was supposed to be for all 7 dogs, but Dawn was able to find a home locally for one of the huskies.  The group had their own motto, The Lucky 7:  7 of them, 7 months old, and 7 days to get from Texas to Illinois.

  1. Darlene Twilley says:

Can you tell me more about your program? I have twoi have two borador rescues. (Half border collie/lab mix)I had 10 but have found loving homes for all the puppies.

  2. I personally know Mrs. Dawn Coleman . She is a wonderful young woman who has been rescue person for “Cold Noses and Warm Hearts ,” and other animals for several decades. She is a very sweet compassionate woman who has also counseled many women in Hospital Emergency Rooms suffering from forms of family trauma. I know that she had rather remain in the background but I think she has a Face Book site that is available.
