FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) Dozens of pilots took part in a massive airlift operation for abused and rescued dogs at the Florence Regional Airport Saturday. Pilots moved over one hundred and thirty dogs to new homes or no-kill shelters across the country.

The event is part of a program called Pilots ‘N Paws, a non-profit group that brings pilots from all over the nation together to transport animals at risk of being euthanized or abused. The group focuses heavily on the South due to widespread overpopulation of pets.

“The spay and neuter practices are not followed very well, and there tends to be overcrowding,” said Pilots ‘N Paws founder Debi Boies. Debi said the group chose Florence as their location for their third annual awareness event today due to the airport’s proximity to Chesterfield County, where twenty two dogs were found shot to death in a landfill earlier this year.

“The story of the Chesterfield twenty-two really resonated with a lot of our volunteers and pilots,” Boies said. “Animals don’t need to be inhumanely euthanized.”

Many of the volunteers that rehabilitated and cared for the rescued animals are local, and are thrilled to be connected to an organization with a nationwide network of animal lovers. The Mitchell family, who took care of an abused dog named Chief from their home in Florence, came to say goodbye as he traveled to his new home in Virginia.

“I was so excited when I found out that Chief was going to be a part of this,” said Renee Mitchell.

But saying goodbye isn’t easy for the volunteers who have come to love their four-legged friends, and some became emotional as the last plane took off.

“I was wishing we could keep Chief,” said Lloyd Mitchell. “But now we’re going to try and keep our home open for more rescues.”

God Bless Pilots N Paws and all the rescue volunteers!

It was a wonderful WEEKEND! From Friday through to Sunday morning, shelter workers, volunteers, pilots and crew members, worked hard to see that all the dogs were processed, loaded and ready for flight. However, four crews did not get to leave on Saturday, but were forced to spend an extra night in Florence because of the weather. Special thanks to Abana (and Subaru) for making the extra effort for hotel rooms. That meant that the volunteers had to take their animals back to the shelters and return in the morning. Pilots and crews; Barry and Mary, Jeff and Heather, Marty and Jean, and Nick returned to the tarmac on Sunday morning to begin the process for flight all over again. Two of the four planes were loaded with over 30 dogs including a VERY pregnant mom-to-be and another mother with her 6 pups. Marty and Jean, and Nick had to fly empty this time, but they know they will be needed again. Their animals were processed on Saturday to fly with other pilots. Nick even tried extra hard to find any animals that needed help along his route home. I might add that Nick was back home in the US on vacation from his job in Japan and rented a plane to help!

In addition to the unwavering dedication of the shelter workers and volunteers in the State of SC and across the US, the PNP is made up of some very special people and it was a great pleasure for Ann and I to get to spend some quality time with seven of these extraordinary individuals. We wish our newest friends and all those that make up the PNP effort all the best in continuing your efforts. May God bless all of you.

And special thanks to my wife, Ann, for asking if I wanted to help. I was blown away by the experience and it will be the first time of many!
