As a Shelter Dog, your life at best is hard. After being placed in homes twice just to be returned to the shelter because your new family cannot handle you does not make your situation any better. It only gets worse, unless of course someone can see your talents in the rough. Chewy was spotted by Firek9.org President Troy Morrison. Firek9.org is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the training and certification of Fire Canines and their handlers. The only challenge was how to get Chewy from San Diego, CA to Austin, TX where Chewy would be trained to become a Narcotics Detection K9.

That’s when PNP came into the picture. The trick was to get four pilots lined up to make the series of flights to get Chewy to Canine Academy training center. Three of the four Pilots were ready to do the flight within three days of putting up the request. The fourth Pilot was never found. Thanks to a generous Pilot HAR (Harry Amster), that volunteered to make two of the four legs, the fight was successfully completed.

I met Pilot Brian Bound and his wife Victoria at the airport in San Diego, and they flew Chewy to Phoenix. They then did double duty as Chewy’s foster home for the night. The Bounds returned Chewy to the airport the next morning and met Pilot Harry Amster. He flew Chewy to El Paso, where he stopped to let Chewy get out and stretch his legs. They then continued on to Midland, TX where Paul and Kathy Hamel met them at the airport and was Chewy’s foster family for the night.

While at the Hamel’s house, Chewy enjoyed two doggie massages. You see Paul is a professional Message Therapist, and Chewy can attest to that. He also enjoyed his walk to the duck pond the following morning before getting on the plane for his final leg of the trip. Pilot Shane Torgerson and co-pilot Zee Ahned met Chewy and Paul at the Midland airport and flew chewy into Georgetown where they Met Lisa Coughlin the Master Trainer for Canine Academy.

Thanks to the joint effort of everyone that was involved in this PNP mission, Chewy will be trained as a Narcotics Detection K9. He will be placed with a K9 handler partner and will be given the opportunity to serve his new community.

Thanks again for everyone’s hard work on this Mission,
Troy Morrison
