By cars, boat, and planes — Twisty and Cyclone get to Maine
Our two adventurous sisters had quite the experience as they traveled
from North Carolina to Maine by cars, boat, and planes — a rescue
trifecta. Pam Hensley, Transportation coordinator for the Wilson
County Animal Shelter put out a call for help transporting the pups to
Portland, Maine. Pilots N Paws offered to help.
Pam drove Twisty and Cyclone to Roanoke Rapids, NC. The planned three
leg trip was for Nick O’Connell to fly them from Roanoke Rapids to
Salisbury, MD; hand off to Ron Levy who would fly the girls to CT; and
Mark Mattie would get them to their new home in Maine. The weather
had other plans and by 10am it was below minimums in Roanoke Rapids.
So, Pam drove the dogs on to Emporia, VA, a short flight from Nick’s
home base in Williamsburg.
Nick headed his plane toward Emporia but, once again, the weather
failed to cooperate and Nick was forced to turn back. Now Pam and the
pups were in Emporia, VA and hours from Wilson, NC. Nick landed in
Williamsburg, got in his car, and headed off to meet Pam and bring the
pups back. The over land trip involved an over water leg by ferry and
the sisters traveled by mode of transportation two getting to
Williamsburg’s Heritage Humane Society. The good folks there offered
food, water and a comfortable place to stay for the night.
The next day was Memorial Day and the weather finally decided to
cooperate. The girls completed their rescue trifecta by plane. Nick
and co-pilot O’Neil Jones flew them to MD where Ron took over after
playing “Line Guy” to get Nick and O’Neil parked.
Ron flew the girls on to CT where the handoff to Mark was spot on. By 5pm these special girls were in a much cooler climate. Reports are that Cyclone had about enough traveling, but sister Twisty was ready for more
adventure.
