Ellie and Her Babies
Between storms and low ceilings and visibility due to moisture flowing in from the Gulf Coast, it had been a rash of non-flying weather in central Texas for several weekends. A flight request came in for a Dandy Diamonte momma and her week-old pups that needed out of a south Texas shelter (George West) and to their foster in Dallas. The weather was setting up to look like there may be a few hour window on Saturday and another on Sunday, but not enough time to cover the entire distance in one shot.
Two pilots planned to split the trip, one each on Saturday and Sunday. Elissa of Barking Back Animal Rescue, the coordinator, found foster Courtney in Austin to keep the pups overnight in order to make it work.
The weather Saturday didn’t clear until later than expected, but there was still plenty of daylight to make the trip. However, the planned first pilot didn’t feel comfortable with the weather conditions, so the pilot for Sunday (Tanya) swapped legs and flew the first leg instead. All went smoothly, and the fosters met the flight in Austin to care for the family overnight. It was the first time Tanya had seen the rescues getting a police escort to the airport.
Well, Sunday came, and the weather window was narrower and less favorable than expected. So, instead of two pilots splitting the trip, Tanya piled the family back into the RV-9A and continued the flight up to Dallas. Lauren met the flight and drove the family to their foster. Carla will foster the dogs until they can make their way to the northeast to find their forever families.
A couple days later, the pups finally opened their eyes. Chaos is sure to abound.
