Flying Myka: Pilots N Paws Rescue Flight 8/27/2014
Myka was a sad and scared Husky in Nebraska, a neglect/abuse case who had been claimed by Northland’s Working Dog Rescue, and who needed to get to medical foster in Houston. Pilots N Paws pilot Bill Kinsinger picked her up near Omaha NE, and flew her to Oklahoma City, OK. From there, the girl was transported by ground to the Dallas TX area and fostered overnight.
On 8/27/2014, PNP Pilot Wade Roberts departed Pearland Regional Airport (south of Houston) in N20223 at 7 a.m. (an approaching low pressure disturbance in the Gulf of Mexico was expected to move ashore that day, and he wanted to beat it back). I landed at Rockwall, TX Municipal Airport at 9 a.m., where foster Paul Crea met me with Myka.
Turned 20223 around in record time, refueling and boarding Myka and departing at 9:30 a.m. Pearland Regional was experiencing an un-forecast strong and gusting (20-24 knots) crosswind that was changing directions by 30 degrees (060-090 degrees). I carefully set up and stabilized 223 on final for Runway 14. Just as I flared for landing, the wind gusted and changed directions by 20 degrees, giving me a sudden headwind. It wasn’t the prettiest of my landings, but we touched down
safely. Myka was claimed by Mary Jo Seuferling, her medical foster. After a parting nose lick, Myka drove off to safety and a new and happy life. I continue to be amazed at the difference in the facial expressions of rescue dogs pre-flight, during flight and post-flight.
