Never Miss A Chance!

Chance was hit by a train twice in Emporia, Kansas.  It was thought that he may have been tied to the tracks.  He no longer has the use of his back legs, or control over his body functions because of the paralysis.  He was found, brought to the shelter, and was going to be PTS until he was saved by an angel named Christina Reilly who took him in and nursed him back to health.

I was asked to fly him to Des Moines as a PnP flight to his adoptive home.  Sara Hendersen, who operates The Pet Project Midwest, opened her heart and home to Chance where he is now cared for and loved in his forever home.  Sara even had his doggy wheelchair waiting for him.

When I agreed to fly Chance to Des Moines, I expected to see a beaten-down, sad, scared, and otherwise pitiful creature.  Boy, was I wrong! Chance may not have the use of his back legs, but it has not affected his spirit in the least.  He may be one of the most loving and alert little guys I have ever transported.  The best part is that his new mom absolutely loves him to death.

I asked Sara Owens, who is a frequent PnP pilot, to fly with me.  The flight was uneventful, but Chance wasn’t about to lie down in the bed I prepared for him.  He wanted to look out the windows and not miss a thing.

When we got to Elliot Beechcraft in Des Moines, Sara went into the FBO to see if anyone was there yet to meet us and Chance.  During that time, I told the ramp guy Chance’s story.  The next thing you know, he had a baggage cart there to wheel Chance into the FBO.  Sara rode along to keep Chance company.

All of the folks at Elliot were taking pictures, getting Chance water, and otherwise doing everything they could to help.  We certainly appreciated it and Chance loved the attention.  It turns out that Old Chancey Pants is quite the ladies man and a huge flirt.

Since then, I make sure that I follow Chance’s Facebook page.  As if the poor little guy didn’t have enough troubles, it turns out he is heartworm positive.  Sara is meeting with the vet today and no doubt will post the prognosis.  All that I can say is that I wish I had half of Chance’s spirit and drive.
