Two Hounds from Texas to Miami…Miami, NM
This trip had two hound dogs, Lucy and Iris, traveling from San Antonio, TX to Miami, NM. It turned out to be a very early morning. Pilot Tanya Card launched in the dark to meet Jo Ellen at Boerne Stage Field (5C1) near San Antonio for a 6:45 swap of the two hounds. The early time was required to catch an already scheduled trip leaving Dallas at 10am. Tanya met Pilot Jack Fulford in Temple and transferred the girls. Jack ferried the girls in his beautifully restored airplane to Pilot Mike Farlow in Denton, northwest of Dallas.
Mike loaded up the Lucy and Iris along with other dogs that Pilot Julian brought up from Houston. Mike had a long leg out to Dalhart in west Texas, where he transferred Lucy and Iris to Abbie Lynn of Colfax Pet Rescue to finish their trip by car and his other passengers to another flight bound for Colorado.
We’ve had a few updates for Lucy and Iris. The first came within a few days from the rescue in Miami, NM. “This morning, Lucy rode off with her new family. Scott, Mary, and Charlotte (their dog) came for the weekend, to meet Lucy and Iris, and decide which of the two girls would be coming home with them. Although Iris pulled mightily at their heartstrings, they made a good connection with Lucy, and she spent the night snuggled with all three of them. She will be living in a fairly rural area in Colorado, with plenty of places to go for interesting walks.”
It took a little longer for Iris to find her new home. In New Mexico, the rescue figured out that Iris (renamed Irie) is deaf. Fortunately, Julian, the trainer at Colfax Pet Rescue, has a passion for training assistance dogs. They taught Irie sign language, along with basic training, and on 15 March she traveled to Boston to be adopted by a woman who will train her to be a therapy dog. The adopter has been seeking a deaf dog with the right characteristics for some time, and visited with Irie in NM while on a business trip.
