Topped off with a Santa hat and a grin, pilot Elliott DeGraff touched down at Frederick Municipal Airport on Wednesday afternoon with a plane full of friends.

Nine puppies braved the two-hour flight from Roanoke Rapids, N.C., to Maryland, where the fostered dogs will find new homes. Seven are expected to land at the Baltimore Humane Society for adoption; two joined Claudia Prather and the Reach Out Rescue and Resources group in Westminster.

The dogs, all of unknown breeds, moved from North Carolina shelters to foster care with the Wilson County (N.C.) Humane Society.
